Moles: When to See a Dermatologist
Yaan Clinic · Gangnam, Seoul
Moles are common pigmented spots formed by clusters of pigment cells. Most are harmless, but a changing mole can be a sign of melanoma. This guide explains the ABCDE warning signs, why mole removal belongs with a board-certified dermatologist who can arrange a biopsy, and how moles differ from freckles. Yaan Clinic in Gangnam, Seoul does not remove moles.

A mole (melanocytic nevus) is a benign growth formed when pigment-producing cells called melanocytes cluster together in the skin. At Yaan Clinic in Gangnam, Seoul, we are an aesthetic clinic, not a dermatology specialist clinic, and we do not remove moles. This page explains when to see a dermatologist and why mole removal should never be treated as a quick cosmetic procedure.
Good to know: Any mole you plan to remove should first be examined by a board-certified dermatologist. Removing a mole by laser destroys the tissue, so it cannot be examined under a microscope; if it were a melanoma, the diagnosis could be missed or delayed.
What are moles?
Moles are small brown, tan or black spots that can be flat or raised. Most adults have between about 10 and 40, many of which appear in childhood and early adulthood.
Moles can change slowly with age, sometimes becoming raised or lighter. Sun exposure, genetics and skin type influence how many moles you have. People with many moles, or a family history of melanoma, have a higher risk and benefit from regular skin checks.
What are the warning signs of a dangerous mole?
Doctors use the ABCDE rule: Asymmetry, irregular Border, uneven Color, Diameter larger than about 6 mm, and Evolving (any change). A mole showing any of these signs should be checked promptly by a dermatologist.
| Letter | Warning sign | What it looks like |
|---|---|---|
| A – Asymmetry | Two halves do not match | Lopsided shape |
| B – Border | Irregular or blurred edges | Notched, ragged or fading outline |
| C – Color | Several colors or uneven shading | Brown, black, red, white or blue areas |
| D – Diameter | Larger than about 6 mm | Bigger than a pencil eraser |
| E – Evolving | Change over time | Growing, changing shape or color, itching, bleeding |
Also watch for the "ugly duckling" sign: a mole that looks different from all your others. In people with darker skin, melanoma can appear on the palms, soles or under the nails, so check those areas too.
When should you see a dermatologist about a mole?
See a board-certified dermatologist if a mole is new after age 30, changing, bleeding, itchy or painful, or shows any ABCDE sign. You should also have a dermatologist examine any mole before cosmetic removal.
A dermatologist may examine the mole with a dermatoscope and, if needed, remove it surgically (excision or shave) and send it for laboratory analysis (biopsy). This is the safest route because it gives a definite diagnosis. In Korea, look for a doctor described as a dermatology specialist (피부과 전문의).
Why is laser mole removal controversial?
Laser mole removal is offered in many clinics because it is quick and leaves a small mark, but it vaporizes the tissue, so nothing is left to examine. If an unrecognized melanoma is lasered, it may appear to go away while cells remain, and it can recur.
That is why many dermatologists recommend excision with a biopsy for any mole that is atypical, changing, or of uncertain nature. If laser is considered for a small, clearly benign mole, it should be after a dermatologist's examination. Ask any clinic who examines the mole first and whether a biopsy is possible.
How are moles different from freckles and sun spots?
Freckles and sun spots (solar lentigines) are flat areas of extra pigment in the skin's surface, while moles are clusters of pigment cells that are often raised. Freckles and sun spots are common aesthetic concerns; moles need medical assessment.
| Feature | Mole | Freckle | Sun spot (lentigo) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Raised? | Often | No, flat | No, flat |
| Changes with sun | Little | Darkens in summer, fades in winter | Stays, may darken |
| Typical onset | Childhood to early adulthood | Childhood | Adulthood, sun-exposed skin |
| Who treats it | Dermatologist | Aesthetic pigment laser may help | Aesthetic pigment laser may help |
If your concern is freckles or sun spots, see our pigmentation guide, hyperpigmentation and dark spots page, and Personal Brightening, Yaan's Pico laser program. Your doctor will first confirm that a spot is not a mole or something needing medical review.
Do moles affect aesthetic treatments?
Doctors usually avoid treating directly over moles with laser or energy devices and shield or work around them. If you have a mole that is changing, get it checked before any facial laser treatment.
For international patients: If you want a mole assessed or removed while in Korea, book a dermatology specialist and allow time for biopsy results, which can take days. Plan aesthetic treatments around that. Our treatment trip planner helps with sequencing.
How can you protect your moles from sun damage?
Use broad-spectrum sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher daily, reapply outdoors, wear a hat and avoid sunburn. Check your skin monthly and photograph moles you want to monitor.

Frequently asked questions
Does Yaan Clinic remove moles?
No. Yaan Clinic is an aesthetic clinic, not a dermatology specialist clinic, and does not remove moles. Please see a board-certified dermatologist, who can examine the mole, remove it surgically if needed and send it for biopsy to confirm it is harmless.
Is laser mole removal safe?
Laser destroys the mole tissue, so it cannot be examined under a microscope. If a melanoma were mistaken for a harmless mole, the diagnosis could be missed. Many dermatologists therefore prefer excision with biopsy for any uncertain mole. Always have a dermatologist examine a mole before removal.
What does the ABCDE rule mean?
ABCDE is a checklist for warning signs of melanoma: Asymmetry, irregular Border, uneven Color, Diameter over about 6 mm, and Evolving, meaning any change in size, shape, color or symptoms. Any of these signs is a reason to see a dermatologist promptly.
Can Yaan treat freckles or sun spots instead?
Freckles and sun spots are aesthetic pigment concerns that Yaan treats with programs such as Personal Brightening, which uses a Pico laser. Your doctor will first confirm the spots are not moles or lesions needing medical review.
How long do biopsy results take in Korea?
It varies by clinic and laboratory, but results often take several days or more. If you are visiting Korea, book any mole assessment early in your trip and ask the dermatology clinic how results will be shared if you have already left.
