Laser toning is a non-invasive skin treatment in which a laser is passed evenly across the face at low energy, over several sessions, to break down excess melanin and refresh skin tone without damaging the surface. At Yaan Clinic in Gangnam, Seoul, laser toning is not a single device but a choice of pigment and tone lasers, selected by a doctor after examining your skin.

Laser toning is widely used in Korea for melasma and general brightening, particularly in Asian skin, which is prone to pigment after sun exposure or inflammation.

What is laser toning?

Laser toning uses repeated, low-fluence laser pulses to fade pigment gradually while keeping heat and skin irritation low. Instead of one strong treatment, results build over a series of gentle sessions.

The classic laser toning device is a Q-switched Nd:YAG laser at 1064 nm, which typically reaches pigment in the deeper epidermis and upper dermis. Newer picosecond lasers do the same job with even shorter pulses, which is called pico toning. Vascular lasers can "tone" redness in a similar way.

Which toning lasers does Yaan Clinic use?

Yaan Clinic uses three lasers for toning: Revlite SI for pigment and blemishes, PicoPlus for picosecond pigment toning, and V laser for redness and vascular tone. Your doctor picks one or combines them.

Laser Type Main use at Yaan
Revlite SI Nanosecond pigment laser Melasma, blemishes, overall tone
PicoPlus Picosecond laser; pico and nano modes; 1064, 532, 595, 660 nm; FDA and KFDA approved Melasma, freckles, spots, brown acne marks, pores
V laser 532 nm KTP and 1064 nm with Genesis modes; heats to 40–43°C; sapphire cooling Redness, visible vessels, red acne marks, tone and collagen

All three appear on Yaan's equipment list, which includes 25 devices in total.

What does laser toning treat?

Laser toning is used for melasma, freckles, sun spots, brown and red acne marks, redness, dullness and uneven tone. It can also make pores and texture look finer.

  • Melasma and hormonal pigment (see our melasma guide)
  • Freckles, sun spots and general sun damage
  • Post-acne brown marks and red marks
  • Diffuse redness and visible small vessels
  • Dull, tired-looking skin and uneven tone

Laser toning vs pico toning vs Personal Brightening

Laser toning is the broad category. Pico toning is laser toning with a picosecond laser. Personal Brightening is Yaan Clinic's customized program that combines Pico, V laser and LDM in one plan.

Laser toning Pico toning Personal Brightening
What it is Low-energy pigment and tone laser Toning with PicoPlus Pico + V laser + LDM program
Pulse type Nanosecond or picosecond Picosecond Both, as needed
Treats redness With V laser Limited Yes
Best for Single, clear concern Pigment and tone Mixed pigment and redness

Most patients at Yaan end up on Personal Brightening because they have more than one concern.

Does laser toning hurt? Is there downtime?

Laser toning is typically described as a mild snapping or warm sensation and rarely needs numbing. Yaan Clinic states that patients return to daily activities immediately after treatment.

Mild redness for a few hours is common. Fine flaking over darker spots can occur for a few days as pigment lifts. Sensitive skin is treated with adjusted settings, and LDM Recovery Therapy can be added to calm the skin.

Good to know: Laser toning that is too frequent or too strong can occasionally cause light patches or rebound pigment, especially with melasma. A doctor should set the energy and the interval between sessions. Daily sunscreen is essential. Any changing or irregular dark spot should be checked by a board-certified dermatologist before laser treatment.

How many laser toning sessions do I need?

Laser toning is designed as a series, because each session fades pigment a little. Yaan Clinic does not publish a fixed number; it depends on the pigment type, its depth and your skin's response.

Yaan presents before-and-after results at around three months. Pigment linked to hormones or sun often needs occasional maintenance afterward.

Who is a good candidate?

Good candidates have pigment, redness or dullness and can avoid tanning and use sunscreen during the course. Most skin types can be treated with suitable settings.

Treatment may be delayed with a fresh tan, active infection or light-sensitizing medication. Tell your doctor about pregnancy, retinoids and recent peels. If you have a history of dark marks after previous laser or acne, mention it, as your doctor may start with more cautious settings.

What to expect

  1. Consultation and Meta-Vu skin analysis – pigment and redness are mapped and your concern is diagnosed.
  2. Laser selection – Revlite SI, PicoPlus, V laser or a combination, with settings for your skin.
  3. Preparation – cleansing and eye protection.
  4. Toning passes – even, low-energy passes across the area.
  5. Soothing – LDM Recovery Therapy or cooling, then sunscreen.

Why choose Yaan Clinic?

Yaan Clinic offers several toning lasers under one roof, treatment performed directly by medical professionals, and LDM Recovery Therapy as built-in aftercare.

Having Revlite SI, PicoPlus and V laser in the same clinic means your doctor can switch tools as your skin changes: for example, starting with a vascular laser to calm redness, then moving to pico toning for remaining brown marks. Treatments are planned one-to-one rather than from a fixed menu, and Yaan uses 3D Meta-Vu skin analysis to track progress between visits. The clinic has more than 16 years of clinical experience, and its safety and genuine-product policy applies to every device. Read about our doctors and see the dull and uneven skin tone guide.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between laser toning and pico toning?

Laser toning is the general term for low-energy laser treatments that fade pigment. Pico toning is a type of laser toning that uses picosecond pulses, which typically break pigment more finely with less heat. Yaan Clinic offers both, using Revlite SI and PicoPlus.

Is laser toning safe for melasma?

Laser toning is commonly used for melasma when settings and intervals are carefully controlled by a doctor. Melasma tends to recur, so maintenance and strict sun protection are usually needed. Overly aggressive treatment can worsen pigment, which is why Yaan personalizes each plan.

How many laser toning sessions will I need?

Most people need a series of sessions. Yaan Clinic does not publish a fixed number because it depends on your pigment type and depth. Results build gradually, and Yaan shows before-and-after comparisons at around three months.

Is there downtime after laser toning?

Yaan Clinic states that you can return to daily activities immediately. Mild redness may last a few hours, and darker spots can flake lightly for a few days. Use broad-spectrum sunscreen every day during your course.

Can laser toning treat redness?

Yes, when a vascular laser is used. At Yaan Clinic, the V laser targets hemoglobin to reduce redness, visible vessels and red acne marks, and it can be combined with pigment toning in the Personal Brightening program.
